Icelandair is known as the king of the stopover concept. The idea is that you can stop in Iceland on your way to one of Icelandair’s other destinations and you’ll love the country so much, the next time Iceland will be your destination.

The stopover does not cost you any additional airfare. You do pay for hotels and your activities, but some countries/airlines will offer free hotel nights among other incentives to stopover and enjoy the hospitality of their country. The concept has been working for years and about 28 other countries have such an offer.

So, what does Icelandiar do to separate themselves from the rest? They’ve created a temporary program called “Stopover Buddy.”

With this program, you go to their Web site, book your stopover trip and request a buddy during the process. The cool thing is that buddy is an airline employee of Icelandair. Apparently, you may get lucky and have the CEO show up if he matches what you want to do. The buddies will take you around for a set time period and show you the Iceland you want to see. Athens have a similar program called This is My Athens which is done by local Athenians, all for free.

Book your Iceland stopover and request a stopover buddy today as at the offer ends at the end of April 2016.
Have you been to Iceland? What do you think?
