| The Mojave Desert,
Mojave California USA (MHV) - Where airplanes go to die... |
These photos were taken on Saturday, June 12, 1999. A group of three of us took a trip out to the desert to see the airplanes that are stored here after their useful life with an airline or other user. Here is our story in pictures. There are several signs that lead to the Mojave Airport, this is one of them
A Continental Airlines (CO) DC9-30 (N17557) sits outside a maintenance hangar in MHV. This airplane was retired from the fleet.
Here is the CO DC9-30 again. To the right is a Middle East Airlines (MEA) B707
These are three of the four Boeing 747-200s that CO owned. These were retired earlier this year, in March/ April 1999, I think. The CO name and logo have been removed.
This is the airplane (N14024) that Kerwin flew from Los Angeles, California USA (LAX) on September 5, 1998 to Honolulu, Hawaii USA (HNL) as the last revenue flight from the U.S. mainland

A shot of the tail
After the crash of TW800, Trans World Airlines (TW) retired its B747-100 fleet. These two were actually auctioned off to a foreign company who will use them for a theme restaurant
In the center of the photo of an Eastern Airlines (EA) DC9 (N8918E). To the left is a Copa Panama (CM) B737. The tail of one the DL L-1011 can be seen at the left of the photo
Delta Air Lines (DL) retired these Lockheed L-1011s late last year and they ended up here in Mojave. There nine in all. The other one is located in the back of the photographer. Not sure whom the other two L-1011s on the right belonged to
A view from the rear a bit closer than the one above
View from the right side
This L-1011 (N787DL) is in perfect symmetry with the others. It appears as if there is only one
